The Flåm Railway - one of the most beautiful railway lines in the world?

The incredible Flåm Railway goes from the mountain station at Myrdal down to Flåm, in the innermost corner of the Aurlandsfjord. Each year, thousands of people from all over the world take the trip, making the railway a very popular attraction in Fjord Norway.

The construction of the railway started in 1924 and it was opened in 1940. Since then, the railway has become more and more popular, and in 2011 the Flåm Railway had an all-time record with over 600.000 passengers.
The Flåm Railway is one of the world's steepest railway lines: almost 80% of the distance has a 55% gradient. The twisting Vendel tunnel that spirals in and out of the mountain is one example of the impressive engineering works.
The Flåm Railway has received several awards. The Society of International Railway Travelers proclaimed the Flåm Railway to be one the world''s 25 most beautiful train journeys in 2011 and in 2010, National Geographic Traveler Magazine put the railway on the top 10 list over the most beautiful train journeys in Europe. It is easy to see why: on the 20 km long journey you go from the high mountain down to the fjord. Wild and beautiful mountains with snow-capped peaks, lush nature, impressive waterfalls and mountain farms clinging on to the steep mountainsides are some of the ingredients.
At the bottom of the Flåm Valley the beautiful Aurlandsfjord reveals itself. The Aurlandsfjord is a tributary of the majestic Sognefjord - the world's longest fjord.
It is easy to get to the Flåm Railway. Take the Bergen Railway from Oslo or Bergen to Myrdal (865 m above sea level). Also check out Fjord Tours's "Norway in a Nutshell®"-tour, which includes the Flåm Railway.
