Discover Scandinavia (10/5 - 19/5)

Day 1 (10/5, Sat)  > Doha

As planned, bakcpackers met at KLIA departure hall, near Counter K to check-in. Bag weighing is a must to record how much the bags grow at the end of the trip. An early surprise to us as the staff informed us that the luggage will go straight to Copenhagen and we are not able to collect our luggage at Doha. Its too late to extract our overnight change in Doha.

Had a quick local breakfast at KLIA satellite terminal prior boarding.

Flying on Qatar Airway has been an awesome experience. Do expect delay in serving the main course. Only sweets as a starter. But the in flight entertainment offers a wide selections of latest movies, to get all passengers stick to their seats throughout the 8 hours flight.

47 Ronin, Self Giant and forgot another one, have been my choice.

Landed at Qatar Airport around 12.00 noon. As there's no aerobridge, passengers will be brought by bus to the terminal. The bus will stop at 4 terminals, so passenger need to know exactly which terminal that they are heading to, color-coded according to the color of the boarding pass envelop. Its about 40 degree in Doha.

Our driver from the Hotel waited for us at the airport. Good that hotel that we are staying in, provide airport transfer. Just a short 10 minutes drive from airport, our hotel is located at Doha old city.

Was informed by the driver that only Qatar Airways still using the old airport, while other airlines has been occupying the new terminal. After check-in at Gulf Horizon Hotel, we went round the Hotel, which is surrounded by many Souq, incuding the famous Souq Waqif, about 10 minutes walk from hotel.

Something new that we learn about the Qatari culture whereby shops are mostly closed from 12.30 noon to 4.30pm. Only few shops are open and we can see people taking nap at the bench. We decided to go Doha city center. We stopped at Doha City Mall, grab some toiletries, had our quick late lunch at the food court. Chicken briyani for my late lunch.

After some negotiation with the taxi driver, we agreed to pay the driver to bring us around tourist attractions in Doha. The driver is more than happy to accept it.

Our first stop is Qatar Museum of Islamic Art. Few photo shoots in front of the museum. Then we stop at fishing village not far from the museum, along the corniche. Perfect view facing Doha modern city with many traditional boats as background.

The driver then brouht us to new modern city outside Doha city called The Pearl. The Pearl is a luxurious residential development area.

After a long day touring Doha city, we need to rush back to the hotel as Yatz's cousin is waiting for us at the hotel a special dinner. Its Maghrib when we arrived at the Doha old city where our hotel is located. The situation is very much different when we left in the afternoon. Just like the situation in Mekah or Madinah. Busy traffic everywhere. I need to rush for a spare shirts. Lucky the hotel is just a walk away to many souq.

We then proceed to a famous arab restaurant. Forgot the name but the lamb briyani is superb. We were too tired to have another round of city tour. We need have a good rest for early flight to Copenhagen tomorrow morning. Thats our day in Doha. Not much to explore, not as modern as Dubai but a good combination of old and modern city, enough for a day trip.

Day 2 (11/5, Sun) > Copenhagen

We had our early breakfast at the small restaurant then proceed to the airport upon arrival of the shuttle that brought us there. Just a mere 10 minutes travel from Hotel to the airport.

Note from Tripadvisor:
From Alesund airport in Vigra, you can board the Flybussen airport bus to Alesund bus terminal (Rutebilstasjonen), which is in the city centre. The airport bus waits just outside the airport luggage belt area (you will not miss the bus stop) for 15-20 mins when the plane lands, so you will get on the bus all in good time. This does not require prior booking.
When you reach Alesund bus terminal, you can put your luggage in the lockers at the bus terminal. There is not much there to deserve a day's stay in my opinion. From the bus terminal, it is just a couple of minutes by foot to the art nouveau wharf houses. If you would like a nice viewpoint of Alesund, you can rent a cab to take you to Aksla... since with young kids hiking up might be a little tiring for them.
From Alesund bus terminal, you can board the “NOR-WAY Bussekspress” bus to Hellesylt. This also does not require prior booking. Here's the website for the bus timetable: …nor-way.no/nbeiis/…
From Hellesylt, you walk from the bus stop to the ferry dock to board the Fjord1 ferry to Geiranger. It's a very short walk, less than 300 metres away.
This ferry cruise basically brings you through the major sights in Geiranger from a fjord viewpoint like the "Seven Sisters" waterfall. Again no prior booking required. Here's the price and timetable:http://www.fjord1.no/en/default.asp?page=1573
I guess you will be staying overnight in Geiranger before travelling back to Oslo.

From Geiranger bus stop, you board the Fjord1 bus to Andalsnes. Here's the schedule: http://www.fjord1.no/en/default.asp?page=1578
Along the way, the bus driver makes 3 photo stops at Ørnevegen, Gudbrandsjuvet and Trollstigen for 10-15 mins.
From Andalsnes, you can take a scenic Rauma Railway ride to Dombas where you will catch your connecting train back to Oslo. You can buy your train tickets online here: http://www.nsb.no/home/. Buy the minipris tickets as they are much cheaper than normal priced tickets.

Stockholm Airport to City Center

Arlanda Express

TO STOCKHOLM
Arlanda Express is the fastest way into town from Stockholm-Arlanda Airport. It only takes 20 minutes from the airport to the Central Station in Stockholm. There are two stations at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport, Arlanda Södra (south) with access to terminals 2, 3 and 4, plus Arlanda norra (north) under terminal 5. Arlanda Express often offers discounts, especially at the weekends.

High-speed trains

Arlanda Express – high-speed train to and from Stockholm

The Arlanda Express runs non stop between Stockholm and Arlanda in 20 minutes. The train departs from Stockholm's Central Station, where you can also buy tickets either at a staffed counter or at the self-service machines.
If you are travelling from Arlanda to Stockholm, you buy your tickets at the airport's information desks or in the grey self-service machines located next to the escalators/lifts leading down. There are escalators/lifts down to the train from all terminals.
You can travel at no cost between Terminals 2/3 and 5 with Arlanda Express – the trip takes only one minute.

Arlanda Express timetable on your mobile

Arlanda Express timetables are available on Arlanda's apps for iPhone and Android. You can see how many minutes are remaining until the next departure, and the following two departures.
Download the apps here:
iPhone app
Android app
Timetables can also be seen on the Arlanda Express website.
Arlanda Express website (new window)

Commuter trains

SL’s commuter trains to Stockholm and Uppsala depart from Arlanda Central Station in SkyCity. SkyCity is located between Terminals 4 and 5. Total travel time between Stockholm Arlanda and Stockholm Central Station is 38 minutes and between Stockholm Arlanda and Uppsala is 18 minutes.
Tickets
You can purchase tickets at the normal SL and UL sales points and at Arlanda Central station. Keep in mind that you must pay an access fee when you get off the train at Arlanda Central station. If the fee has not been added to your ticket, it is paid at the ticket gate in SkyCity

http://www.swedavia.com/arlanda/to-from/train/

The airport buses tend to be cheaper than the train.
As mentioned above, with a local travel pass etc you may as well consider the 583 bus + commuter train. Those SL commuter trains do not serve the airport, only Märsta which is 10-15 minutes by bus west of Arlanda airport. (The trains that do serve the airport cost more.)
In addition a couple of SL buses (not to be confused with the standard airport buses known as Flygbussarna) also serve the airport direct to/from Stockholm, only at night. (593: travel time about 45 mins, 592: travel time almost 90 mins, no cash payment accepted on board any buses).

Most major taxi companies have fixed prices at around 500 SEK from Arlanda to Stockholm City, so depending on how many you´ll be, that could be a cheaper (and more convenient) option.
The Arlanda Express is a rip off!! If you are true budget travellers, go for the local transport! At the airport there's an information/ticket booth of SL, the local transport company. They sell tickets for bus/train/tube etc. If you plan to stay in Stockholm for a while, get a 24- or 72-hour pass, 115/230 SEK respectively. From the airport you catch a bus (583) to Märsta station, change to local train for city centre. You pass is valid on all local transport within greater Stockholm area.
At the ticket office you can also get a map with all buses, tube etc fo future excursions.
Have a great time in Stockhol!!

Stockholm-Arlanda Airport (ARN) is Sweden’s largest international airport, handling a lot of the country's international and domestic air traffic. It is located 37 km north of Stockholm, near the town of Marsta in Sweden.
Stockholm-Arlanda Airport has four terminals in use. Since the airport is quite big, arriving can be a confusing experience. Arlanda is almost shaped like a horseshoe, with international flights going through terminal 2 and 5, while domestic flights go through terminal 3 and 4. (There is no terminal 1.)
Each terminal of Stockholm-Arlanda Airport has its own selection of interesting shops and things to do. In total, there are 35 retailers and 33 restaurants. A central building, SkyCity, connects Terminals 4 and 5. Everything is very efficient for a high volume airport. Information desks can be found at terminals 2, 4 and 5. This is also where you will be purchasing train tickets.
There are three train stations at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport, called Arlanda South, Arlanda North, and Arlande Central, so it really isn’t very confusing. The central station mainly serves trains going on long distance trips. The long distance trips only operate from here. The fastest way to travel is on the Arlanda Express. It travels non-stop between the airport and Stockholm every 15 minutes throughout the day. Children under the age of 7 get to travel for free. The train has two entry points at terminal 5, and it also stops at terminal 4 and the junction at terminal 2. To travel back to Stockholm-Arlanda Airport, catch the express at the Central Station (Centralstationen) in Stockholm.
The idea of renting a car in Stockholm might appeal to some who which to explore the city at their own leisure. Car hire is available just outside of Stockholm-Arlanda Airport. During peak hours, airport transfer buses operate between the terminals and car rental companies. Outside Central Station, you can look out for Statiol and Avis.
Taxis are located outside each terminal. There should be fixed rates in place to travel to and from Stockholm to Stockholm-Arlanda Airport. Private taxi companies might vary, so always ensure that you have settled on the rate before you leave the airport. The biggest taxis in the area are Flygtaxi, Taxi 020 – if you are booking from abroad, Taxi Kurir and Taxi Stockholm. Flygtaxi is the airport taxi, and can be booked at the same time with the flight. If you want to make use of a “green” or environmentally friendly taxi, look out for the “ecotaxi” sign.
Some buses in Stockholm also run on environmentally friendly biofuel. The public bus, Upplands Lokaltrafik (UL) runs between the airport and the city center. On returning to the airport, the busses can be found at the Central City Station in Stockholm every 10 minutes. The average journey should take about 45 minutes. Children under 16 will travel for free if they are accompanied by an adult.
The airport shuttles to and from the city are a little bit more comfortable than the buses. They depart at terminals 2, 4 and 5 towards the city.
Another option is the underground train system. If is extremely efficient with 100 stations covering the city. Trains run from 5.00 am until 1.00 am the next morning. You may purchase aStockholm Card as well. This is a practical discount pass that offers free entry to certain attractions and it makes allowance for unlimited public transport on all of the city’s buses, trains, subways and trams!
If you have some time to spare in this beautiful city, renting a bike is very easy and convenient. There are cycle paths aplenty, and is often faster than taking the bus, while offering more scenic views of the city.

Copenhagen Airport to City Center

Copenhagen Central Station is located in the heart of the city, bordering to the rough but also trendy Vesterbro. It is a gateway to all public transportation in and out and around Copenhagen.

Here you will find buses, taxis, local S-trains as well as regional trains which will take you to North Sealand, other areas of Denmark, Sweden and most of Europe - and the airport.

Copenhagen Central Station is home to the Danish Public Transport Corporation DSB's travel agency, a post office, supermarket, bakery, eateries, shopping centre, baby changing facilities, bathrooms, showers, luggage storage and a lost-and-found office.

Getting from Copenhagen Airport (CPH) to Copenhagen

The Arrival area in Copenhagen Airport, CPH
When arriving at Copenhagen Airport, CPH, you have several choices when going to downtown Copenhagen. The choices are listed here in the recommended order - the lower the option, the longer it takes to get to downtown Copenhagen and/or the more expensive it is. Going to Langelinje and the cruiseships takes a bit longer and will cost a bit more if you don't take the train, as it is located Northeast of downtown Copenhagen and CPH is South of the city center.

Metro

The M2 Metro line leaves from the Metro Station in Terminal 3 at Copenhagen Airport. The trip from CPH to Kongens Nytorv in downtown Copenhagen takes 15 minutes. The ticket can be bought at automats or at the train counter in Terminal 3. The trip between CPH and downtown Copenhagen covers 3 zones and costs DKK34.50 (app. €4 or $5). The Metro leaves every 4-6 minutes depending on the time of day, around the clock.

Train

Trains leave from CPH to Copenhagen Central Station every 20 minutes (04, 24, 44 or 4 minutes past the hour, 24 minutes past the hour and 44 minutes past the hour), and the journey takes 30 minutes. When you exit the customs area, continue straight ahead until you're about to bump into a counter. That's the ticket counter where you buy the train ticket. A one way ticket to travel 3 zones costs DKK34.50. After getting your ticket, go to the rolling stairs down to the train platform on either side of the ticket counter. Make sure you go to the platform from which trains go to Copenhagen, not Malmoe in Sweden. If you are going to the Langelinje cruise harbour then take the train past Copenhagen Central Station for another 2 stops to Østerport Station (the ticket price is the same). You could walk the remaining 500 meters from there, but a taxi is probably a good idea.

Taxi

When leaving the customs area, turn right and go through a rotating door, and you are at the taxi area. An attendant will tell you what taxi to get into. The journey to Copenhagen will cost from DKK220 and up going to the Town Hall Square, and travel time will be from 20 minutes and up - especially during rush hours! In the hours between 07.00 and 10.00 and again between 14.00 and 18.00 you will probably get to downtown Copenhagen faster by taking a train. If you are going directly to a cruiseship at Langelinje then this is your best option. A tip for the driver is included in the fare price, but it is customary to round up to the next higher amount dividable by 10, or an extra DKK10 or DKK20 if you pay using a credit card. Tell the taxi driver that you will be paying using a credit card when you get in, and give it to him so he can validate it. An oddity: in Copenhagen most taxis are called Taxa, not Taxi.

To and from the airport

The Copenhagen Metro runs to and from Copenhagen Airport. The Metro is the fastest and cheapest way of getting from the airport to the City, Frederiksberg and Vanløse.
The Metro station is in Terminal 3, at the very end. On arrival you need to go past the airline check-in counters (SAS, Lufthansa, etc.) and up the escalators. Terminal 2 is a short walk away. With departures to and from the airport as often as every four minutes, you don’t need to plan anything in advance. The trip from the airport to the City takes just fourteen minutes.
Metro or train?
The metro is the fastest way of getting to and from Copenhagen City or Frederiksberg. However, if you want to go to Copenhagen Central Station or the western part of Copenhagen City, you are better off taking the train. The regular train is also operating from terminal 3, and you can check the best route to your destination by using the Journey Planner, see the link below.
PricesYou can purchase tickets for public transport from the Metro ticket machines located in all Metro stations, including the airport. You can also buy tickets from the ticket counter in Terminal 3.
The tickets are valid for the Metro, the trains and the busses in greater Copenhagen - you need a three zone ticket from the airport to the city center or a City Pass

Initially called Kastrup Airport, Copenhagen International Airport (CPH) is the busiest airport in Scandinavia with around 25 million passengers passing through it every year. It is situated on the Isle of Amager, 8 kilometers from the city center of Copenhagen.
Because Copenhagen International Airport has to host up to 20,000 people per day in transit alone, the airport features state of the art facilities, including restaurants, shops, work areas and lounges. If you have a couple of hours to spare, you can take a guided city tour which can be booked at the airport.
Copenhagen International Airport has four terminals, with the rail station located under terminal 3. From here, trains and metro rails can take you to Copenhagen's central station in 14 minutes. The trains depart to Copenhagen from platform 2 every 20 minutes. Shuttle busses are also available to take you to the different terminals.
Copenhagen is a huge city containing several districts and is a metropolis for shopping and nightlife, so it is very easy to lose track of time. Maps are available at the airport from tourist information, but the main districts are Indre – the heart of Copenhagen, Christianshavn, Nørrebro, Amager – the airport district, and Vestegen.
The Central Station of Copenhagen (called Københavns Hovedbanegård by the locals) is the largest station in Denmark and the hub for all train traffic in the country. There are two metro lines in Copenhagen, with the city center as its base, giving you access to an affordable and fast way to travel in and around the city 24 hours a day. The trains depart every 4 minutes. The M2 is the train you want to take to and from the airport. When arriving back at the airport, you will get off at platform 1. It also takes you through the inner city and the Christianshavns Canals, passing a few tourist attractions along the way. The third metro line in Copenhagen will be completed in 2018.
Airport shuttles to the city and regular taxi services are abundant at Copenhagen Airport. All registered taxis can be identified by a registration number and the “Taxa” sign on the roof. Available taxis will display the word free (fri) and most drivers can speak both English and German. Do keep a look out for pirate taxis, and do try to avoid making use of them. They lack legal and safety protection. As opposed to most taxi services in other countries, all prices are inclusive of VAT and tips.
At Copenhagen Airport, buses can be found between terminals 2 and 3. They depart every 10 to 20 minutes, running from 5.30 am until midnight. Buses are very easy to find, considering that there are over 400 lines. In the city the two main terminals can be found at the Town Hall Square and at the Central Station. Always do try to get your hands on the latest route maps at the relevant stations, since the routes can change frequently.
If the option of renting a car at CPH appeals to you, do keep in mind that everyone drives on the right hand side of the road, with their headlights on. Always. The speed limit is 50 km/h in towns and 110km/h on highways. Car rental offices can be found at both terminal 1 and 3 at Copenhagen Airport. You can choose between Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Budget and Sixt.
If you have some time to spend in Copenhagen, a trip on the harbor buses is a must. You get to explore the city from the waterfront and seaside. Those buses make several trips daily in the harbor, visiting the port, Opera House and the Royal Library.
